Explore Mount Elgon National Park with Offmap Adventures

Mount Elgon National Park is a natural wonder that spans the border of Uganda and Kenya in East Africa. Named after Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano that erupted over 24 million years ago, it has the largest surface area of any extinct volcano in the world. The park covers an area of 1,279 sq. km, with Uganda covering 1,110 square kilometers and Kenya covering 169 square kilometers.

The Ugandan side of the park was gazetted as a forest reserve in 1929 by the colonial government. Due to human encroachment, the Ugandan government officially converted the reserve into a national park to protect and preserve the ecosystem, following the steps of the Kenyan government which had converted its side earlier.

Mount Elgon has five major peaks, with the highest one, Wagagai, reaching 4,321 meters above sea level and located entirely in Uganda. The mountain also has the world's largest caldera, measuring about 40 kilometers across, surrounded by several subsidiary craters, some of which contain hot springs.
