Getting to Mount Rwenzori


By Road:

From Kampala: You can reach Fort Portal (about 300 km away) via Mityana – Mubende, which takes approximately 4 hours. Alternatively, you can take the longer route via Masaka – Mbarara – Bushenyi to Kasese (about 350 km), which takes around 6 hours.

From Kasese: The park headquarters at Nyakalegija is the starting point for the hike.


By Air:

Chartered Flights: Scheduled flights from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese airstrip take about 1.5 hours. From Kasese, it's a short 30-minute drive to the park.


Climbing Seasons


Mount Rwenzori can be climbed all year round, but the best times are during the dry seasons:

December to February: Short dry season with clear skies and excellent trekking conditions.

June to August: Long dry season with cooler temperatures and stable weather, ideal for multi-day treks.


Climbing Requirements


Permits: Obtain permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Fitness: Moderate physical fitness is required. Engage in cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and hiking to prepare.

Guides and Porters: Experienced guides and porters are essential for safety and carrying gear.

Gear: Pack waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, warm layers, a sleeping bag, and a backpack.

Mount Rwenzori is located in southwestern Uganda, along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park encompasses approximately 996 square kilometers and features Africa's third highest peak, Margherita Peak, which rises to 5,109 meters.


Day 1: The Journey Begins – Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut

Your adventure kicks off in the vibrant town of Kasese, where the lush greenery and the promise of the mountains welcome you. From here, it's a trek through the dense forest, where the chatter of monkeys and the rustle of leaves accompany you to Nyabitaba Hut at 2,652 meters. The air is fresh, and the anticipation is palpable.


Day 2: Into the Wilderness – Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

Rise and shine! The trek continues through bamboo forests and across pristine streams, leading you to John Matte Hut at 3,414 meters. The terrain changes, offering new challenges and stunning vistas at every turn. Keep your eyes peeled for the exotic flora and fauna that call this place home.


Day 3: The Alpine Desert – John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut

Today's adventure takes you through the Bigo Bog, a surreal landscape dotted with giant lobelias and groundsel plants. As you approach Bujuku Hut at 3,962 meters, the scenery shifts to an alpine desert. The rugged beauty of this place is something to behold, with the majestic peaks of Mount Speke and Mount Stanley in the distance.


Day 4: The Climb Gets Steeper – Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut

Ascending towards Elena Hut at 4,540 meters, you'll traverse rocky paths and glacial rivers. The air gets thinner, but the excitement only grows. This is your staging ground for the ultimate challenge: the summit of Margherita Peak.


Day 5: Summit Day! – Elena Hut to Margherita Peak

The day you've been waiting for! Starting in the early hours, you begin your ascent to Margherita Peak at 5,109 meters. The climb is tough, but the reward is immense. As you stand on the roof of Africa, the world stretches out below you in a panorama of glaciers, valleys, and distant peaks. Take a moment to savor your victory before beginning the descent.


Day 6: Downhill Adventures – Margherita Peak to Kitandara Hut

After the exhilaration of summiting, it's time to head back down to Kitandara Hut at 4,023 meters. The descent offers new perspectives and the chance to explore more of this unique ecosystem. The glacial lakes and verdant valleys make every step a delight.


Day 7: The Long Descent – Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut

Continue your descent to Guy Yeoman Hut at 3,261 meters. The trail winds through lush vegetation, with the soothing sounds of streams and the sight of cascading waterfalls keeping you company. Reflect on the journey so far and the stories you'll have to tell.


Day 8: The Final Leg – Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyakalengija

The final stretch takes you back to Nyakalengija. The sense of achievement is overwhelming as you emerge from the forest, having conquered one of Africa's most challenging and beautiful peaks. Celebrate your successful trek with a well-deserved rest and the camaraderie of fellow adventurers.
